The Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for formulating policies, supporting and monitoring programmes and coordinating the activities of various Central Ministries, State Governments and other nodal authorities in so far as they relate to urban development issues in the country.
With the National Urban Sanitation Policy (NUSP), India's Ministry for Urban Development launched in 2008 a comprehensive policy framework for municipal sanitation systems facilitating their improvement. In 2014, Government of India has reinforced its commitment to improve the sanitation situation in Indian cities by launching the Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission). Another project which has been launched by the ministry concerning SNUSP II is the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation). The objective of this mission is to create infrastructure to improve the quality of life of all, especially the poor and the disadvantaged.
